The Ocean Rescue

Facts

The oceans are the largest ecosystem on earth and are home to over two million different species. Unfortunately, 38 % of these species are already threatened with extinction, mainly due to heavy plastic pollution of the oceans. In addition to the 270 million tonnes of plastic in the sea, another 8 million tonnes of plastic enter the sea every year.

A very large proportion of plastic waste consists of so-called ghost nets. Ghost nets are fishing gear that is either deliberately thrown overboard or washed off ships or coasts. As a result, over a million marine animals die every year either because they get caught in the ghost nets or because they swallow the plastic.
